During Term 2, students compete in the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition. An in-school competition is held to select two students from Stage 2 and two from stage 3. Selected students advance to the Western Regional Final. Students are required to present a prepared speech on a topic chosen from a given list. The speech had to have some multicultural theme or content. They also have to prepare an impromptu speech in a 5-minute time limit on the day of the competition. In 2019 CVPS had one student achieve a high distinction and two students received a distinction
Debating and Public Speaking Workshops are held in term 3 with the focus being to develop student's skills in these areas. Students from Stages 2 and 3 are involved. The aim of these workshops is to expose more students to the art of public speaking and debating and develop their interest and knowledge of what is involved. The workshops include activities to develop confidence in speaking to an audience, development of speaking and communicating skills, argument development, the researching, organizing, and presenting of a speech and the encouragement of teamwork.
Each Stage participates in a fortnightly rotation of workshops.
Stage 3 students will also visit Mudgee Public School for combined workshops, which will include mini debates.
Our debating teams compete in the 'Kerri Parkes Western Debating competition'. The competition collaborates within zones of schools across Western NSW in a series of debates. In preparation for these major debates, students are guided through the Department of Education Arts Unit debating skills resources and expert recorded workshops. Alongside their formal debates against other schools within our zone, students compete in intra school debates.
During Term 4, students from Stage 2 and 3 are invited to participate in the Kevin Pye/Roger Wotton Public Speaking Competition. This is a local competition and involves all schools in the local Mudgee area. Students present a speech on a topic of their choice. Students will be chosen from an in-school competition to participate in the final at Mudgee Public School.
CVPS students also participate in the NAIDOC Public Speaking Competition which involves students from Stage 2 and 3. The students present a speech on the theme of NAIDOC Week.
